Proyecto Azteca believes that housing is a stabilizing force from which a family builds their future. At the center of our work is our Self-Help New Construction Program. Through the program, qualifying families acquire valuable lifelong skills in home construction and financing. Proyecto Azteca utilizes construction as a tool for change. It builds on the people’s willingness to help themselves by self-help housing; through this experience, people’s dignity and respect are restored in believing that with the proper support they can address their own needs.
Proyecto Azteca secures mortgage loans to pay off colonia lot purchase balances then families use exclusively their own labor to build quality homes. Proyecto Azteca's homes used to be built at Proyecto Azteca's construction yard in San Juan, TX, but within the last three years we have modified our houseplans and build directly on families' lots on concrete slab.
Families qualified for our programs allow for participating families to work on their or their neighbor's home daily, using house plans developed for Proyecto Azteca by licensed architects and engineers. Professional trainers oversee construction, provide safety tips and provide formal home-building instruction.
